Laurence Aberhart

Nelson, New Zealand, b. 1949

Laurence Aberhart

Laurence Aberhart grew up in Nelson, where he attended high school. His later training was as a primary school teacher, although he accepted only one teaching placement before deciding to become a full-time photographer. Aberhart is self-taught, and intentionally uses antiquated processes and technologies in his work. Aberhart’s photos are often contact prints taken from large-format glass plate negatives, thus preserving the maximum levels of clarity and detail in the resultant print. Aberhart’s work mainly focuses on landscapes, architecture and interiors, documenting the relationships between space and the physical manifestations of culture. Aberhart has made a particular study of monuments, war memorials, carvings and public buildings in New Zealand, producing a body of work that comments on the complexities of national identity and postcolonialism. Aberhart’s work has been widely exhibited both in New Zealand and overseas, and he is generally regarded as one of New Zealand’s foremost living photographers.
