Fiona Pardington

b. 1961, Auckland, New Zealand

Fiona Pardington received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Elam School of Fine Arts in 1984, was awarded a Master of Fine Arts (first class honours) in 2003, and a Doctorate in 2013. She has exhibited extensively both in New Zealand and overseas. She is of both Maori and Scots descent, and her practice is actively informed by this dual heritage. Pardington’s practice centres on photography, and the relationship between image, memory and narrative. Her early works were explorations of feminist themes and issues around representation of the female, while a series of works from 2001 onwards have taken a museological turn, documenting the various taonga held by various institutional collections, both in New Zealand and overseas. Most recently, Pardington has produced a series of large-scale still life photographs that blend 17th -century European influences with New Zealand plants and animals. In 2015 and 2016 a major survey exhibition of Pardington’s work, Fiona Pardington: A Beautiful Hesitation, toured New Zealand’s major galleries.
